Which Type of Blinds is Better and Which is Right for You?

Real wood blinds vs. Faux wood blinds for your home. The look of wood blinds is classic. They match any home decor style and the choice in colors and stains range from white to mahogany to black. The functionality of blinds makes them a go-to choice for many homeowners, giving you full control over light filtering and privacy.

But which is better? Real wood blinds vs. Faux wood blinds for your home? And which option is the right one for you? The answer to those questions depends on a few things: the climate you live in, the room your blinds are being installed in, your budget and also, how much upkeep you intend to do. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of faux wood blinds (also called vinyl blinds) and real wood blinds.

Real Wood Blinds

Pro: Versatility

Real wood blinds bring sophistication and refined quality to your home, giving them a timeless appeal. The variety of woods, stains and colors give you endless choices to match any home decor style. This versatility in woods means that your blinds can be as light or as dark as you want them, giving you the ability to custom match them to the existing wood in your home.

Pro: Natural Insulation

Wood is a natural insulator, helping keep your home cool in the summer and warmer in the winter. They also block UV rays when closed. This makes wood blinds a great choice for those seeking more energy efficiency and lower energy bills. Con: Not Suitable for High Humidity

High humidity can warp and fade real wood blinds, making them an unsuitable choice for high humidity regions and rooms. If you live in a dry climate, it is still not suitable to install real wood blinds in rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms, kitchens or laundry rooms. However, blinds are perfect for other rooms in your home such as bedrooms or the living room.

Con: Requires Regular Polishing

Real wood blinds require regular upkeep and cleaning. Simply dry dust them with a clean, lint free cloth. To get dust off the strings, use an attachment on your vacuum. You will also need to regularly use furniture polish or lemon oil to keep them looking their best. To do this, lightly spray a clean cloth with the polish or oil and run the cloth along each blind slat. It is not recommended that you use water on your real wood blinds to clean them. If you don’t want to worry about regular polishing, then wood blinds may not be the right choice for you.

Draw: The Most Expensive Option

If you are on a budget, real wood blinds might not be the option for you. However, if properly taken care of, they have great longevity, meaning you get what you pay for. In the long run, paying more for a better quality product could save you money.

Faux Wood Blinds

Pro: Wood-Like Appearance

Faux wood blinds, also known as vinyl blinds, have the look and feel of real wood but are instead made from durable polymer materials. Faux wood blinds also come in a variety of colors (including neutrals and whites) and wood grain finishes.

Pro: Durable and Moisture Resistant

Faux wood blinds aren’t susceptible to humidity like real wood blinds are, making them more durable and moisture resistant. You can install them in any room of your home no matter your climate or the use of the room (bathrooms included!) without worrying about your blinds warping or fading. Another plus is that faux wood blinds won’t crack, chip, peel or yellow over time.

Pro: Easy to Clean

Have pets or kids? No worries! Faux wood blinds are really easy to clean and can even be hosed down for deep cleaning. For regular cleaning, simply wipe the slats clean with a lint free cloth and use the hose attachment on your vacuum to get rid of dust on any strings. For a deeper clean, use a wet cloth with a mild detergent or submerge your faux wood blinds in a bathtub of water or hose them off outside.

Pro: Budget Friendly

Faux wood blinds give you the look of real wood without the price tag. And if well cared for, can last for years to come. This makes them a great choice for those who are on a budget but still want a more upscale, timeless look.
