The higher standard in window coverings
Roman shades date back to the Roman Empire. Perhaps the most famous use of Roman shades during that time period were the large pleated shades used to shield spectators in the Colosseum. This awning was called the Velarium and it operated much like modern-day Roman shades, with the only difference being the sheer size of the Velarium.
While these seemingly ancient, but albeit classic, window treatments might not be your first idea when deciding on window coverings for a home with modern style, they actually do look spectacular in modern homes.
More Structured Pleats for Modern Homes
Roman shades come in four different pleat styles. Soft fold and European fold are what we often picture, with the softer, voluminous folds. However, the plain fold and standard flat fold offer more structured pleats that work beautifully with modern home decor styles.
The standard flat fold offers a simple, contemporary look. When fully lowered, the shade appears flat. However, when raised, the fabric draws up into a neat bunch of folds much like cellular shades.
The plain fold style brings just a little more texture and body to the window treatment. The folds, or pleats, are crisp and plain, but are still visible even when the shade is completely lowered. When raised, these pleats become more pronounced.
Mounting Options
If your window frame has the depth allowance, we recommend installing your Roman shades with an inside mount versus an outside mount. This means that the shade will hang within the confines of the window opening, keeping your window treatment lines clean and modern.
Fabric and Lining Options
The fabric options are seemingly endless for custom Roman shades. You have your pick of patterns or solids, colors, and fabric textures. Go bold with a modern and colorful print for a statement window, or opt for a solid neutral fabric with a bit of texture for an understated look.
There are also several options for linings on the back of your Roman shades. A basic lining will keep all of your window treatments looking cohesive from the outside, even if you have chosen different fabrics for different rooms. You can also opt for room darkening or blackout fabric, which are great for bedrooms, nurseries, or media rooms. These linings can improve your utility bill savings by helping to better regulate your home’s temperature year-round.
Why Custom is a Better Value
Custom Roman shades are made with high quality materials. This means that they will last longer, giving you greater value in the long run. It’s also important to choose the right fabric for the job to increase longevity. Sturdier fabrics can stand up to heavy use, while gauzy, thin fabrics will wear with heavier use. In other words, if you know that you will be raising and lowering your shades daily, be sure to choose the right fabric for the job.
