Our 3 Favorite Environmentally and Energy Efficient Window Coverings

We know that design and function aren’t the only things on your mind when it comes to buying new window coverings. Environmentally friendly window treatments not only are better for the environment, but are also more energy efficient, saving you money on your utility bill.

But what makes a window covering eco-friendly? There are many different options out there, but today we are highlighting our top 3 favorite window treatments that save you money and help save the environment thanks to their energy saving features.

1 | Cellular Shades

Cellular shades are the most energy efficient type of shade. Also known as honeycomb shades, the pocketed design makes great insulation for windows, trapping both hot and cold air. This keeps your home’s temperature much more regulated so your heater and AC aren't running as often, saving you money on your utility bill and saving the environment from high electric or gas use.

Cellular shades come in a variety of options, including fabric, colors, linings (get a solar lining or blackout lining for even more insulation), and the number of cells. The more layers of cells, the more insulating your shades are. Most manufacturers offer single, double, and triple layer cell construction.

Hunter Douglas offers a tax discount/refund on their triple-cell cellular shades, helping to offset the cost of your purchase!

2 | Solar Shades

Certain solar shades are labeled as “eco-friendly.” They are known for reducing glare while maintaining your view. The main features of solar shades include protection from the sun’s glare and UV rays, improved indoor air quality, and energy savings. They can also help reduce carbon emissions by reducing your reliance on artificial lighting.

These solar shades are made of a polyester/PVC combination material and come in a variety of colors. You can also select from different weave openness. The tighter the weave, the more light filtering it offers. Most manufacturers have a small offering of these “eco-friendly” solar shades.

3 | Smart Shades

You can turn just about any shade (including solar and cellular shades) into smart shades with a motorized or smart mechanism. This allows you to open and close them on a schedule, further reducing your cooling and heating costs. Some smart shades can even be connected to your voice command home systems (like your Alexa), giving you the ability to open or close your shades when the need arises.
