The higher standard in window coverings
Natural light in our homes creates such a warm glow. So many home builders are designing homes with large windows or a wall of windows. While so many of us love the natural light it brings, it can pose questions about how to dress such large windows for some privacy, especially when you think about just how heavy some window coverings are and how much damage all that sunlight can cause. However, it is possible! Today, we’ll be diving into our favorite window treatments for large windows or a wall of windows.
1 | Vertical Blinds
There is a reason that vertical blinds have been such a staple in homes for years! They are ideal for large windows and windows that get a lot of traffic (like sliding glass doors). Because they are made from lightweight panels, they won’t put a lot of stress on your wall or window casing. Today’s custom vertical blinds that are made from PVC or vinyl promote minimal fading which promotes longevity of the product, even as they take a beating from UV exposure.
Tip from the Pros: Pets and kids love to play with vertical blinds, so make sure you speak with your design consultant about ordering extra vanes, so you can swap out broken or bent ones for an exact match.
2 | Vertical Panels
Vertical panels are like the classy cousin of vertical blinds. These wider panels make a big statement while keeping the overall weight of the window treatment down. Also like vertical blinds, these wider panels easily slide to either side and tilt to allow for just the right amount of privacy.
Tip from the Pros: While you can get both vertical panels and vertical blinds in fabric, we recommend not installing fabric treatments in kitchens, bathrooms, or other rooms that have high humidity.
3 | Roller Shades
Roller shades are another lightweight option for large and tall windows. When opened, the material rolls up into a neat little stack and when lowered, creates a clean look with its minimalist design. Roller shades come in a variety of materials and fabrics to match any home decor style.
Tip from the Pros: For wide windows, opt for 2-on-1 or 3-on-1 headrails. This means you have one headrail (the top bar that houses the shade and operating mechanisms), but you have multiple shades that can be operated independently. This can further decrease the weight and strain on mechanisms.
4 | Cellular and Vertical Cellular Shades
Both cellular shades and vertical cellular shades are made of incredibly lightweight materials, which makes them a great choice for both big and tall windows. What makes cellular shades one of the most popular window treatments is that their pocketed design traps hot and cold air, helping you save on your energy bills. But don’t worry, these aren’t your grandmother’s cellular shades. Today’s shades are sleek and modern with a variety of fabric opacities and linings.
Tip from the Pros: Standard cellular (horizontal) shades are great for tall windows. But for wide windows, opt for the vertical cellular shades that move side to side on a track, rather than up and down.
5 | Motorized Shades
Finally, it can be tough to try and open and close both wide and tall windows. No one wants to climb over a sofa or get on a ladder every time they want to create some privacy or shade the room from the sun. Adding a motorized mechanism to your blinds or shades will allow you to open and close your window coverings with convenience!
