Window coverings are often the last piece you select when setting or refreshing a room’s style, but they are key to creating a finished space. There are so many options to choose from that it probably leaves your head spinning, wondering where to buy windows coverings from. Let’s dive into some of the places you can buy window coverings from and their pros and cons.

Online Only Stores

Online stores such as Overstock, Wayfair and even Amazon have become popular places to buy window curtains and shades from.

Pros:
  • The options in color, pattern and texture are seemingly endless
  • Most online stores offer blinds, shades, curtain rods and curtains
  • Online shopping is convenient and delivery may even be free in some cases
Cons:
  • Because products are online, you don’t see them in person until they are delivered to your door
  • You definitely need to read up on the store’s return policy just in case what you ordered isn’t what you thought it would be or it doesn’t meet your quality standards
  • You have to do all of your own installing or you have to hire a third party handyman to do it for you, in which case, you need to make sure you evaluate your handyman before hiring
  • Only standard curtain sizes are offered and there are no custom window coverings available

Big Box Value Stores

Stores like Target and Walmart offer in-store and online shopping.

Pros:
  • You can find a variety of options for shades, blinds, curtain rods and curtains in store and even more options online
  • Returns are generally very easy if you end up not liking what you purchased
  • Just about everything is very reasonably priced and great for those on a budget
Cons:
  • Supply in store is limited, especially when it comes to blinds typically offered in basic metal and plastic
  • Online shopping may be convenient, but you run into the same problem with not being able to see the product in person until it is delivered
  • You may find great values but you also get what you pay for, so quality may not be as good as in other stores
  • You have to do all of your own installing or you have to hire a third party handyman to do it for you, in which case, you need to make sure you evaluate your handyman before hiring
  • Only standard curtain sizes are offered and there are no custom window coverings available

Department Stores and Other Upscale Big Box Stores

Department Stores like JCPenny and other more upscale big box stores such as Pottery Barn offer better quality items than the value stores.

Pros:
  • You can purchase higher quality curtains, curtain rods, blinds, shades and shutters from these stores
  • You can purchase in-store and online
  • Some of these stores do offer custom window coverings
Cons:
  • Not all of these stores offer custom window coverings, so only standard sizes may be available
  • Not all of these stores offer all different types of window coverings (for example, Pottery Barn offers shades but not blinds or shutters)
  • You may have to do your own installation or hire a third party handyman

Home Improvement Stores

Lowe’s and Home Depot offer a variety of options, including curtains.

Pros:
  • They offer curtains, curtain rods, shades, blinds and shutters
  • There are both in-stock and custom options for blinds and shades
  • When you purchase custom options you also have the ability to purchase installation services
  • You can purchase both online and in-store and there are a variety of price points to choose from
Cons:
  • Options for curtains may be more limited compared to other stores
  • Not all window coverings have custom options (for example, curtains)
  • You will have to install your own in-stock purchases or hire a third party handyman

Custom Window Covering Store

Custom stores, such as Elevated Views, offer a wide variety of custom window covering options.

Pros:
  • You have someone to help guide you through the entire process of choosing, purchasing and installing your window coverings
  • You have more than just standard sizing options available, your options are all custom and include curtain rods, curtains, shades, shutters and blinds
  • You have a large variety of color, pattern and texture options to choose from
  • When buying from a custom window covering store, you are often supporting a local business
  • All installations are done for you
Cons:
  • This option is a bit pricier than purchasing from other stores
